Fraction Strategies

Today we went over the fraction strategies for working out a part of an amount.  Watch for yourself and have a go at our practice problems

There are 35 people in Room10.
If 3/5 of them are boys, how many are girls?

There are 36 candles to put on Mrs Parker's birthday cake.
How many candles are on 3/4 of the cake?

Addition Strategies.

Today we were going over our addition strategies. We learned how to move counters from one pile to the other, to make it a tidy number. Watch the strategy video below.

Try these examples for yourself.

37 + 18 =

45 + 19 =

129 + 54 =

Show your working and email me the solution!

Human Geometry

Today we were learning about geometry rotation, symmetry and translation. We practiced by using our bodies, we all had to stand up and practice turning ourselves 1/4 turns clockwise and anti-clockwise, then we were really challenged, using translation codes to move left and right, forwards and backwards. Later in the day when we were having our reflection circle some of us said that was our learning highlight of the week.
Next time we will get a video of our Human Geometry translations and rotation.

What's really in our snacks?

Over this week we have been focusing our maths learning around reading the food labels on our most popular snack food. All of our packets told us how many grams of sugar was in a serving, but we wanted to know how teaspoons of sugar that was. We found out that 1 teaspoon of sugar is equivalent to 4 grams of sugar.

This meant that we had to use our knowledge of four times tables to solve the problem. Some of the labels however could not be equally divided by four! Those ones we had to use fractions as well to solve the problem.
1 teaspoon of sugar is equal to 4 grams

A 250ml cup of Whittaker’s Chocolate Milk has 30 grams of sugar.

How many teaspoons is that?
7 ½ teaspoons

A Banana Calci-Yum has 21 grams of sugar in it.

How many teaspoons is that?

5 ¼ teaspoons of sugar

A triple chocolate chunk cookie has 20 grams of sugar.

How many teaspoons of sugar is in it?

5 teaspoons of sugar

Once we solved the problem we measured the sugar out into a clear bags so we could all see, just how much sugar is in the food we eat.

We know that too much sugar, is not good for our health. It can damage our teeth and is linked with obesity and diabetes. By knowing how much sugar is in the food we eat we can be more mindful about the food choices we make and remember that sugary foods are an occasional treat. Not something to be eaten all the time!
Also, we need to remember to brush our teeth every day, so that we don't end up with big dentist bills!

Welcome Back Tamariki!

Week one of term three has kicked off with a bang. We have some fantastic programmes happening this term including Keeping Ourselves Safe, Fair Play, Poetry, Speeches, Persuasive and Narrative Writing, Multiplication strategies, and film making.

This week we have started writing poems, check our individual blogs (linked down the side of the page) to see our creative writing.

Today we practiced a relay and discovered all the reasons why fair play is important to us. It helps the game become more fun when we practice taking turns and following the rules that we all agree on.
Taking turns in a adventure course
Following rules, and playing fair!
We've also had fantastic success so far in our maths thinking. we are learning to use Stage 5 and 6 strategies which means solving maths problems using our times tables instead of skip counting.
Check out some of our multiplicative strategies that we used to solve how many bunches of 5 can fit into 320. Check our other Math blogposts to see some useful videos showing how to use smart strategies.

Holiday Home Learning

With one day of term 2 left each child went home with a home learning pack today.

In it was a reading log, some creative blogging prompts, and some mathematics strategies and practice activities.

With two weeks of no school it's time to keep cozy, and take ownership of your own learning.

If you want help with your maths here's a few videos that will teach you some smart strategies! Share them with whānau and see if they can do the problems too!

Happy home learning Glenbrae tamariki. Ka mau te wehi.

Solve fraction problems using repeated addition.

Solve division problems by using your times tables.

Solve subtraction problems like 85 - 39 = _
by making the second number a "tidy number"

Solve fraction problems like 2/5 of 25 =

Solve multiplication problems like 4 x 27 = _
by splitting the bigger number into tens and ones.

Subtraction strategies

Today in maths we learned a new subtraction strategy using an analogy about a policeman and a robber. This strategy helps us to subtract numbers by making the number we are taking away into a tidy number. Then we also need to change the other number the same way... watch this great video to see what to do. Once you are finished try the problem below.

There are 54 apples in the fruit box.
We eat 27 at morning tea.
How many are leftover?

Baking for ANZACs

Today in room 7 we were learning about procedural texts.
A procedural text tells us how to do something. We were writing about how to make Anzac cookies.
So, we did just that.
As the recipe was being made, we had to take notes about what to do, step by step.

WALT: write a step by step instruction
SC: Write an ANZAC cookie recipe.

Once we had finished writing the steps, presto! The cookies were baked and we all got to taste them! How delicious.

We also incorporated lots of maths into making these biscuits.

The recipe we had made only 20 biscuits, but we have 30 people in our class. So, we had to work out how much of each ingredient we needed.
First we worked out that we needed one whole batch of the recipe, plus half a batch.
It was easy to work out that we needed 1 & 1/2 cups of flour instead of just 1 cup.
But, it got really tricky when we were trying to work out half of 1/2 a cup of sugar! It turns out it was a quarter of a cup of sugar. So altogether we needed 3/4 (1/2 + 1/4) of a cup of sugar. Tough stuff! But we got there.

All about the fractions

WALT: add fractions

Yesterday we learned about adding and subtracting fractions.

It gets a bit tricky when we look at the symbols 1/4 1/2 1/3 etc.

So Mrs Parker cut some apples up into halves and then quarters.

We quickly learned that a half plus a half equals one whole.
We could see that 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 equals 1 whole.

We could see that if I have 6 quarters (or forths) of apple pieces, I actually have 1 and a half apples.

We even worked out that a half plus a forth is the same as having 3 quarters of apple pieces!

Then afterwards we all enjoyed the healthy snack of eating the apple quarters!

Fractions with Pizza ~ Luisa

Luisa created this "pizza" by cutting it into eighths. Not only did she tell us how many eighths each topping was on, but also how many pieces of each topping altogether. Well done Luisa. Check her individual blog for the digital copy also.

I learnt how to make pizza art using fractions.
I found it difficult to draw the pieces of topping on my pizza.
